Top 10 Scholarship Tips
- Apply only if you are eligible.
Read all of the scholarship requirements and directions carefully to make sure you are eligible before you submit your application. You will not be awarded if you are not eligible for the scholarship.
- Complete the application in full.
If a question requires an answer – ANSWER IT COMPLETELY. Don’t leave it blank…you could be disqualified.
- Follow directions.
If you do not understand the instructions, ask for help.
- Did you submit all of the required documents?
If other college or high school transcripts are not submitted to the Office of Admissions and Records, you may be excluded from certain scholarships.
- Letters of Recommendation are important.
Make sure you inform the person making the recommendation what you are applying for, who to submit it to and the deadline for submission.
- Make sure your essay makes an impression.
The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific. Include concrete details to make your experience come alive: who, what, where and when. Make sure it fits the scholarship you are applying for.
- Watch out for deadlines.
To help keep you on track, impose a deadline on yourself that is at least two weeks before the stated deadline. Use this time to proofread your application before you submit it.
- Give it a final “once-over.”
Proofread the entire application carefully. Be on the lookout for misspelled words or grammatical errors. Ask a friend, teacher or parent to proofread as well.
- Remember – your scholarship application represents you!
Your ability to submit a neat, timely, complete application reflects on you. It’s your face to this organization. Take pride in yourself by submitting your best application.
- You are an award winner.
If you are awarded a scholarship, always send a thank-you letter to the donor. They need to know that their money is going to help you succeed and that you appreciate their generosity. You will be contacted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on when to write the letter and how to address it to the appropriate donor.
